- Also known as Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Engine Control Unit (ECU)
- Monitors sensors in the engine bay that manage fuel-air mixtures and emissions
- Installation is best left to a professional technician
An Engine Control Module is in a lot of ways the brainpower behind your engine management system. Also known as the ECU (Engine Control Unit) or PCM (Powertrain Control Module), this component monitors many of the sensors inside your engine compartment that create the energy needed for your car to run properly.
The module controls the fuel mixture, manages ignition timing, oversees fuel pump operation, analyzes emissions performance, and much more. In some cars, this component even controls other systems in addition to its primary tasks, including cruise control, ABS, anti-theft systems, and body control module.
Your vehicle's Engine Control Module can weaken or fail for a number of reasons, including wiring issues. Other reasons may include excessive heat and vibrations, inadequate voltage, and general wear from corrosion and age over time. Complete Engine Control Module breakdowns are unlikely, while system issues within this component are more common. When these underlying issues compound or are ignored for too long, you could wind up needing the entire Engine Control Module replaced.
Because the Engine Control Module supports so many essential systems, pinpointing a failing one can be hard to do. For example, your Nissan's check engine light might illuminate — which could be triggered by many other things that have nothing to do with your Engine Control Module.
Other vague indicators of a failing Engine Control Module include reduced engine performance, misfires, or your Nissan may not start at all. The most important concern when an Engine Control Module fails is that the systems and sensors it maintains are often not too far behind.
Are you able to replace a damaged Engine Control Module on your own? We recommend that you leave this job to the professionals. Not only does installation involve several challenging steps. but the module will need to be programmed for your car's specific model and year, VIN, engine, and more. Doing this install requires special tools, navigation, and expertise so you should not do the replacement on your own.
Purchasing the incorrect Engine Control Module can cause severe engine concerns within your vehicle. Equip your ride with one that's made especially for your Nissan by ordering OEM components at Nissan Parts & Accessories.
