Your Nissan's engine depends on the Direct Ignition Coils to start. Thousands of volts are needed for spark plugs to make the right spark, which is considerably more than the 12 volts your Nissan's battery is able to produce. The ignition coils take the lower voltage from your battery, increase it, and forward it to the spark plugs. The spark plugs are then able to start your vehicle. Without functioning Direct Ignition Coils, you can't operate your Nissan.
There are a few different types of ignition systems. A direct ignition, or coil-on-plug ignition, has the ignition coils positioned on top of the spark plugs. In the majority of modern vehicles, each spark plug has one Direct Ignition Coil, but some pair one coil with two spark plugs. The number of spark plugs and Direct Ignition Coils your Nissan has depends on the engine size. Reference your owner's manual to find your engine size.
A Direct Ignition Coil generally will last 100,000 miles, but this can vary depending on your driving habits and vehicle. If your spark plugs are in need of a replacement, it can put more stress on your ignition coils and cause them to wear out quicker. When a Direct Ignition Coil is busted or failing, it can't be repaired and you will need a new one. You could have a bad Direct Ignition Coil if your car won't start, your check engine light is on, your car backfires, or your engine stalls.
With the proper tools and know-how, it's possible to replace a Nissan Direct Ignition Coil by yourself. Still, you can always bring your car to the closest service center to have a trained technician carry out the replacement.
