  • Monitors the air-to-fuel ratio within your engine
  • Can become worn over time or damaged by a fluid leak
  • Replacement by an Nissan professional is recommended

Your Nissan combustion system depends on various sensors to maintain an adequate environment for performance. One of these mechanisms is the O2 or Oxygen Sensor. At their inception, Oxygen Sensors were rolled out to reduce emissions, and they can be found in the large majority of cars on the road today. Depending on which Nissan model and year you drive, your engine may have one or more sensors.

Your Oxygen Sensors help measure the air-to-fuel mixture, helping your engine's internal computer regulate the ratio depending on whether your engine is burning rich (too little oxygen) or burning lean (too much oxygen). Having the incorrect ratio of air-to-fuel may negatively affect the combustion engine, leading to poorer fuel efficiency and increased emissions. That's why it's smart to get a new Nissan O2 sensor.

An Oxygen Sensor makes electricity, and the voltage it renders depends on the product of the exhaust system. In other words, the electricity generated by your Nissan O2 sensor varies if the air-to-fuel ratio is off. When a variance in voltage is detected, your Nissan's computer adjusts the ratio to keep it running as designed.

Your vehicle's O2 sensor may need to be replaced due to regular wear and tear. In some cases, you may need to replace it prematurely if your Nissan sensor is damaged by coolant or oil leaks, or other contaminants. Some telltale signs that indicate the need for a new Nissan sensor include: cylinder misfires, loud idling, poor gas mileage, and an illuminated check engine light.

Since the majority of modern cars rely on multiple O2 sensors to regulate the operation of the combustion process, it can be difficult for vehicle owners to diagnose and repair this issue at home. Occasionally, the process requires a specialized code scanner and lifting the vehicle up on jacks to get a clear view of the undercarriage. Accordingly, most Nissan owners choose to get their Oxygen Sensor replacement services with their local Nissan technicians.
