  • Installation is best left to a professional technician

An Engine Control Module is in many ways the brainpower behind your whole engine management system. Also called the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Engine Control Unit (ECU), this essential component monitors the many sensors inside your engine bay that generate the energy needed for your car to run efficiently.

This component maintains the fuel-air mixture, manages both ignition timing and fuel pump operation, monitors emissions performance, and much more. In some cars, the Engine Control Module even manages other processes as well as its main jobs, including cruise control, ABS, anti-theft systems, and body control module.

The Engine Control Module can become damaged for several different reasons, including short-circuiting. Other reasons may include excessive heat and vibrations, too little or too much voltage, and general wear from age and corrosion. Full-blown Engine Control Module breakdowns are rare, while system problems within this part are more common. And when these internal problems compound or are ignored for too long, you may end up needing to get a full Engine Control Module replacement.

Because the Engine Control Module supports so many of your Nissan's systems, identifying a damaged one can be difficult. For example, your check engine light may illuminate — which could be the result of other parts that have no relation to your Engine Control Module.

Other vague indicators of a compromised Engine Control Module include poor or reduced engine performance, misfires, or your Nissan may not start at all. The most important concern when a control module gives out is that the systems it manages are usually not too far behind.

Is it possible to replace a damaged Engine Control Module on your own? We recommend that you leave this replacement to a professional technician. Not only does this process consist of various complex steps, but the control module will need to be programmed for your vehicle's specific model, year, VIN, etc. This installation process requires special tools, navigation, and expertise so it should not be done by anyone other than a professional.

Buying the incorrect Engine Control Module can lead to severe engine problems. Make sure you get one made especially for your Nissan by ordering genuine OEM components at Nissan Parts.

This Engine Control Module, part 237033SA1A, is compatible with Nissan Altima 2014-2016. See the What This Fits tab for more details.
